Radiolaria

The Radiolaria are protozoa that produce intricate mineral skeletons. Radiolaria are renowned for their intricate silica structures, resembling delicate glass, which accumulate on the ocean floor to form what scientists refer to as radiolarian ooze. Inspired by this glassy and crusty essence, I wanted to combine my work once again with an experimental approach. To achieve this, I used a process of growing sodium borate, or borax, crystals on these radiolaria-inspired forms. These radiolaria forms ended up being hung in a cluster arrangement, allowing the viewer to get close, move around it, and examine this collection of hanging forms.
