Diatoms

A diatom is any member of a large group of microalgae, found in the oceans, waterways and soils of the world. My journey into the world of diatom forms began with a reference to the Victorian tradition of arranging these delicate organisms under the microscope. Inspired by this aesthetic, I crafted slip-trailed porcelain pieces reminiscent of those elegant arrangements. The process involved pouring liquid clay onto slabs of plaster, allowing them to dry, delicately peeling them up, and carefully firing them. Finally, I arranged and pinned these creations to the wall, in a specimen like approach. Following a more literal approach to my inspiration, I chose to elevate the scale and transform the presentation method. I suspended these pieces with monofilament in an immersive installation, creating an environment that casts shadows and emphasizes the vastness of these microorganisms. This arrangement alludes to their existence as countless organisms drifting in the ocean.
